CARRIE OUTHIER BANKS, Ph.D. is the founder
and Executive Director of the Domestic
Violence Surrogate Dialogue (DVSD). She has over 15 years of
experience volunteering and working in domestic violence shelters
with both women and children. In 2005, Carrie received her Ph.D. in
Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University in
Fairfax, Virginia where she authored her dissertation, "Finding
Their Voice: Observation of the Surrogate Dialogue Program". With
the help and support of Washington County Community Corrections, the
Family Violence Intervention Program, Family Focus Counseling
Center, and Dr. Mark Umbreit, she initiated the Surrogate Dialogue
pilot program in Hillsboro, Oregon. Five survivors and five
offenders participated in the first sessions; their observations can
be seen in the "Observations from Participants" section. The pilot
Surrogate Dialogue Program is now a permanent component in
Hillsboro, Oregon renamed the Domestic Violence Surrogate Dialogue
(DVSD). Carrie graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1994
with a Master's in Communication and in 1992 received a BA from the
University of Tennessee. Currently, she lives with her family in
Portland, Oregon.
GAYLE A. SHELLER, M.A., M.S.W. is the
Program Director. She was co-pastor of
the
Springfield
Church of the Brethren in 1983 when the
congregation founded Brethren Housing in
Springfield,
Oregon
, a shelter for homeless
families and adults with mental illness, now a part of ShelterCare
of Lane County. After 22 years as a pastor, counselor, retreat
leader and writer, Gayle returned to
Portland
State
University
’s Graduate School
of Social Work to earn her MSW in direct human services. Gayle’s
experience includes an internship at Washington County Community
Corrections in their counseling program for offenders and
families. Along with her professional expertise, she brings a diverse experience of
service on non-profit and civic government boards. Gayle
graduated from the University of Oregon in 1983 with
a Master's in Sociology and Communications and received her
BA from the San Francisco State University in 1972. She
lives with her husband near their four adult sons and families
in Hillsboro, Oregon.
VOLUNTEERS
PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS: Washington County Community Corrections in Hillsboro, Oregon supplies both meeting places and security for the dialogue sessions as well as office space and supplies for the staff and dialogue sessions.
